Vidette Messenger - 9 Jan 1930

Sorrow entered scores of Porter county homes today when word was received of the death Wednesday of Mrs. Ellen O.' Hannon, who through her long service in rural schools had wielded a wholesome influence over two generations of citizens. Mrs. Hannon died Wednesday afternoon about 2 o'clock at the home of her son, John Hannon of Marshall Grove, with whom she had resided since the death of her husband, Thomas Hannon, last June.

Miss Ellen O.' Donahue, daughter of Florence and Mary Donahue, was born in Valparaiso 71 years ago. She attended St. Paul's parochial school and graduated from that school, after which she taught in the rural schools of Center Township, and later Pleasant Township, her entire teaching service covering a period of 35 years, 15 of which was in Kouts. She was one of the charter members of The Church, a society now extinct.

Mr. Hannon retired from farming thirteen years ago. They then purchased a small tract of land in Kouts. Mr. Hannon died last June and since that time Mrs. Hannon's health has been failing. Her death was due to heart trouble.

Surviving are one son, John, with whom she lived, one daughter Mrs. Mary Kelly, LaPorte, one brother Daniel of Seattle Washington, eleven grandchildren and scores of other relatives both here and in Kouts.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Kouts, Rev. Father John Nickels, celebrating mass. Burial will be in the family plot in St. Mary's cemetery.
